Why I am giving up Blackberry….

by admin on June 23, 2010

I’ve been an avid blackberry fan for a number of years, with almost 12 blackberry  phones under my belt,  I can truly say I was addicted to Crackberries!  With that said, I have to say one more thing.   Here it is; No one can do email like a Blackberry.   If email is your thing, then NOTHING will beat a Blackberry.  My passion for blackberry started way back when I had a Blackberry with an antenna sticking out!  Some of you may know the model number right off the bat.  Regardless of getting stuck on that….

I used the Blackberry Storm1 for 2 years now and because of their bad decision making in releasing the phone “too early” & my Providers decision to not provide the needed updates to the OS,  it has caused me nothing but grief, and that’s an understatement.  yes, I did do the update but they had already lost me by then since I heard nothing but complains from my wife and friends on how I should get rid of that phone (the Storm1) because it was truly useless.

While I wanted to give Blackberry all the benefit of doubt, they really lost a loyal customer this time.  I will not be buying the latest and greatest Blackberry, even though I am an early adopter of technology, and all my closest friends have Blackberries, due to me recommending them, the Storm1 was the last straw.  They may have made a better Storm 2, but I don’t really care for it anymore.

Also, one of the things that most all phone companies are not getting these days is the fact that its all about the apps!  let me repeat, “IT’S ALL ABOUT THE APPS!”

What do I mean by that…?  Well, we all know how well Apple markets their “apps” not just their apps but all apps in general.   “There’s an app for that” hold so true when referring to Apple apps.  In my opinion, the success of iPhone is not just simplicity of the OS on the iPhone or iPod Touch but its the freedom that Apple gave to developers to develop almost any app they could dream up.

The most important secondary thing to attach to that is the fact that end users, aren’t limited to how many apps they can install on their 8GB or 16GB iPhone/iPod Touches.  Yes, I know that the limitation is there based on the hard drive capacity iPhone/iPod Touch you bought, but as a end user you can install “N” number of apps, as long as you stay within the physical capacity of the device.

Not true for most of the phone out there, including the Storm.  My Storm situation is quite pathetic.  Here it is:

  • Storm 1 has 1 GB of built in memory.
  • Storm came with a 8GB Micros SD External Card.
  • Storm has over 70% of this 1 GB memory filled up right from the start. (Faceboook, Messengers, Navigators, Other VZW Apps(that I have no need for) even Visual Voicemail, etc. (there’s more, but wont list them)
  • This leaves us with 300 MB for Apps.  You cannot use the 8GB External Card to download and /or play your games.

To some this may sound like a lot and to some it may be disheartening!

Take this example, if a user wanted to download – Grand Theft Auto: China Town Wars Lite ( the free version)  on their iPhone, its 144 MB!   Not a big deal if you have 8000 MB, but a HUGE deal when you only have 300 MB available.

This is the point I am trying to drive home, Developers don’t develop for Blackberry because of these silly memory limitations.  There were so many apps that I wanted to download and buy on Blackberry, but couldn’t!  and if I did, I’d couldn’t click the Answer button due to low memory!  I was always low on my Blackberry memory and I only used basic apps that I absolutely needed.

I got an Droid Eris and same issue!  Im not sure about the exact memory on the Eris but AGAIN, I am limited on the number of Apps that i can download due to memory  constraints.

Motorola Droid, I hear has the same issue, App install limited due to Memory limitations!

HTC, I think walked across this one with their Incredible phone, so kinda alleviating the issue of the App Install Limitations.

Over the years, Facebook has grown too large even for itself and with that came all the consequences of managing users data and how freely it should be indexed into the Internet.

So their privacy settings have been Up and Down over the past few years and since it was quite confusing I stopped using it altogether.  I heard a few horror stories…so anyway Facebook has been in the limelight light for the past few weeks due to their changes in their privacy settings again.  Lo and behold, they made it even more confusing than ever before.

The exact text they used for user to read and choose their settings was obviously perfected by a lawyer to make it confusing as possible.

Their goal is to confuse you.  if it wasn’t then why don’t they rename “Everyone” to “Everyone on the Internet”.  They want to still be able to collect data on you and confuse you in the process.  They have a database that all the big name tech companies want to get their hands on so it should come as no surprise that they want to continue building their database!

Now, heres the fun part, you can download the Facebook App called PrivacyDefender, brought to you by ReputationDefender.  this is one great app.

Just install it into Facebook as an App and drag the slider to set the settings.

I went from this :

Facebook-Privacy-Settings-2

to this in ONE CLICK! (oh yes, its also adjustable)

Facebook-Privacy-Settings-1
